Native American Cultural Education Program

Colorado State University (CSU) stands as a land-grant institution deeply rooted in a commitment to education and inclusion. We acknowledge, with respect, that the land we occupy today is the traditional and ancestral homeland of the Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Ute Nations, as well as a gathering place for many other Native tribes. This recognition honors the Indigenous peoples who are the original stewards of this land and acknowledges the significant historical context in which our university was established. It is essential to understand that our founding came at a great cost to these Native Nations, and through this acknowledgment, we reaffirm our responsibility to uphold their connections to their traditional territories.

In line with our mission, CSU recognizes the importance of culturally responsive education, particularly for Native American and Alaska Native students. We proudly partner with the Native American Cultural Education program within the Denver Public School District, which serves approximately 1,000 K-12 students. This program aims to provide culturally relevant support that ensures academic success and overall well-being for these students. Specific goals include addressing the disparities in graduation and dropout rates, as well as preparing students for post-secondary education and career opportunities. By respecting and integrating cultural traditions into our educational practices, we strive to create an equitable learning environment where every child can succeed. Through these efforts, we not only honor the land we are on but also the rich heritage and futures of the Native communities we serve.

In addition to our commitment to Indigenous education, the Little Shop of Physics proudly upholds the belief that anyone, regardless of age, can be a scientist. We showcase student-built hands-on experiments at CSU Spur, located throughout the Vida, Terra, and Hydro buildings. These interactive exhibits invite visitors to explore scientific concepts in engaging and accessible ways, fostering curiosity and a love for learning in all individuals. By providing these immersive experiences, the Little Shop of Physics aims to inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators, enriching the community and promoting a lifelong passion for exploration and discovery.

Kids at the Birdseed Collective are also building take-home-science experiments!

We are engaging students from schools in the GES neighborhood in Denver in partnership with CSU Spur.

We are excited to be a part of CSU Spur during their Second Saturday open house events to engage visitors our hands-on science activities.
